SOURCING & SUPPLY CHAIN
4/20 Inventory Planning: The Wholesale Rush Happens Before the Holiday
Retail Sales Are the Last Step
4/20 is a retail event, but the supply-chain surge happens earlier. Wholesale platforms see retailers increase purchasing through March and into early April as stores build inventory for promotions and higher consumer traffic.
The Data Shows the Pattern
LeafLink’s analysis of wholesale activity reported that in 2025 platform GMV rose from $116.9 million in the week of March 3 to $137.2 million in the week of April 7, then dropped as retailers shifted from stocking inventory to selling through it.
That pattern reinforces a simple point: if your goods are not already moving through the supply chain by the time retail demand peaks, you are late.
Plan Backward
Start with the required warehouse or distributor date. Work backward through domestic delivery, customs, ocean or air freight, final QC, production, component procurement and artwork approval. Add buffer for corrections.
Avoid Paying for Poor Planning
Late orders often create expensive choices: air freight, reduced customization, partial shipments or accepting whatever inventory happens to be available. Better forecasting creates more options.
