Why Stainless Steel Is Common

Stainless steel is an alloy family defined by chromium content and includes hundreds of grades. Austenitic grades such as 304 and 316 are widely used because of their corrosion resistance, strength and manufacturability.

304 is common across food, industrial and medical applications. 316 generally contains more nickel and includes molybdenum, improving corrosion resistance in certain environments. The right grade depends on the component, exposure conditions, design and required performance.

Terms such as ‘medical grade’ can sound reassuring, but buyers should ask for actual material specifications and supporting documentation. A supplier should be able to identify the alloy, control raw-material sourcing and maintain traceability appropriate to the product.
