Why Quality Control Starts Before Production

1 min read

Inspection Is the End of QC, Not the Beginning

Finding defects after production is better than finding them after delivery, but it is still late. Effective quality control begins before a purchase order reaches the factory.

Step 1: Define What Good Means

Specifications should identify the characteristics that matter: materials, dimensions, tolerances, function, appearance, printing, packaging, compliance documentation and acceptable quality criteria. If the requirement is not defined, it is difficult to enforce consistently.

Step 2: Qualify the Source

Factories should be evaluated for the capability required by the product, not simply because they offered an attractive price. Supplier history, equipment, process control, capacity, documentation and responsiveness all matter.

Step 3: Watch Production

In-process checks can identify issues while corrective action is still possible. Depending on the product, that may include component checks, assembly review, dimensional inspection, functional sampling and production reporting.

Step 4: Final QC Before Release

Finished goods should be checked against the approved specification before shipment. The objective is not a promise of zero defects; manufacturing does not work that way. The objective is to systematically reduce preventable defects and non-conformances before they become the customer’s problem.
