PACKAGING
Child-Resistant Cannabis Packaging: What to Confirm Before You Order
Compliance Starts Before Artwork
Child-resistant packaging is not something to solve after the package has been designed. The package format, closure, documentation and intended product all need to be considered before production.
In New York, Part 128 requires retail packages to remain child-resistant for the life of the product, be tamper-evident, fully enclose the product and protect it from contamination and degradation. Licensees must also maintain documentation showing compliance with applicable child-resistance standards.
Ask for Documentation
A supplier saying a package is ‘CR’ is not enough. Buyers should identify the exact package configuration and obtain the testing or certification documentation applicable to that configuration. Changing dimensions, materials or closure mechanisms may affect whether prior testing is relevant.
Sustainability Is Part of the Specification
New York’s rules also address packaging sustainability, including restrictions on plastic packaging unless required post-consumer recycled content or an applicable exception is met. That means material choice is increasingly both a commercial and compliance decision.
Build the Spec Before the PO
GreencoastGO™ treats packaging quality as a specification problem. Dimensions, materials, closure performance, printing, artwork, color, tolerance, documentation and pack-out requirements should be established before production and checked during the quality process.
